Spelling & grammar for job applications
Clear writing helps employers see your real skills — simple explanations, common mix-ups, and a free AI check for anything you write.
One tailored application beats ten rushed ones. Quality wins.
Why it matters
Employers read your writing before they meet you. You don't need perfect English — a few careful checks show care and professionalism, and the tips below make it easy.
Common mix-ups made easy
“Your” owns something (your CV). “You’re” means “you are”.
“Its” owns something (its team). “It’s” means “it is”.
“Their” owns, “there” is a place, “they’re” means “they are”.
“Too” means also or very. “Two” is the number.
“Then” is time (first this, then that). “Than” compares (better than).
“Affect” is the verb (it affects me). “Effect” is the result.
“Were” is past tense, “where” is a place, “we’re” means “we are”.
You “hear” with your ears. “Here” means this place.

Top tips before you send
- Use the free check below, then read your writing out loud — your ears catch mistakes your eyes miss.
- Keep sentences short. One idea per sentence keeps your meaning clear.
- Use the UK spellings employers expect (organised, not organized).
- Don’t rely on spell check alone — it misses “form” when you meant “from”.
- Type it, take a short break, then read it again with fresh eyes.
- Ask a friend to read it, or draft it in our free word processor first.
