Keeping motivated while looking for work
Job hunting is a marathon, not a sprint — kind, practical ways to keep going and look after yourself along the way.
Progress, not perfection. One job at a time.
It's normal to find this hard
Rejection, silence and waiting are part of almost every job search — they say nothing about your worth. Almost everyone who found a job has been exactly where you are now.
A kind daily routine
- • Start at a set time and get dressed — it signals the day has begun.
- • Do one to three quality, tailored applications rather than dozens of rushed ones.
- • Add one thing that builds you up: a short course, a skill practice, some volunteering.
- • Finish at a set time too — evenings and weekends are yours.
Celebrate progress, not just outcomes
Keep a 'done' list: applications sent, new skills, helpful conversations. On hard days, read it back — it's proof you're moving, even when it doesn't feel like it.
Keep connected
- • Tell people you're looking — many jobs are found through conversations, not adverts.
- • Stay part of something: volunteering, a class, a community group. Structure and company help.
- • Ask for help when you need it — friends, family, or the wellbeing support below.
Look after yourself
- • Sleep, food and a daily walk do more for motivation than another hour of scrolling.
- • Break the search into small blocks with real breaks between them.
- • Kind, practical wellbeing support at mtrainpb.uk.
When it feels too much
It's OK to pause. A few days off won't ruin your search — and if low mood or worry is taking over, talk to your GP or the wellbeing support above. Asking for help is a strength.
